Mike B spent the morning scaling Mount Doug on his bike in the rain, while his brother slept in.

Renaat and myself did a 40 km ride, following the course of the upcoming triathlon starting at Elk Lake, this weekend:

The virtual bikers will have to give this a go soon.

Leech Town Report: cancelled!

100% of riders were missing today, recovering from alleged injuries and infections. Some said "it's too hot". No ride took place. This remarkable statistic will go down as a high point for virtual bikers everywhere, in their continuing quest to find new and good excuses. Today will be enjoyed on the couch, in easy chairs, and ,yes, doing those pesky errands that significant others will require of us. Happy Canada day Monday!

erythropoeitin? me?

Pierre D angrily denied the latest allegation that he used performance-enhancing drugs, dismissing the claims .In a two-page denial released Friday, the seven-time Tour de France champion called the allegations reported in Le Monde, France's most prestigious newspaper, "stale, unfounded and untrue."

A report on the virtual bikers meeting July 1 Canada Day:

True to form, noone rode today (unless it was in secret). We gathered for a feast at Mike B's house and discovered the delights of gougere, and received an education on the tour de france.
On the agenda were items such as

1) why are we not riding in the tour de france?
(answer - we don't do doping)
2) why are some of us are not going to ride on Monday? (good excuses like soleus tears)
3) various good reasons why not to ride today (on call, too tired, errands, Canada day)
4) team uniforms - we want yellow shirts (someone might confuse us for tour leaders)

Great meeting; great meal - thanks Mike

Greetings, relatively strong men of the peloton:

Here's the recipe for gougere that you requested today.

1 cup chicken stock
1/2 cup butter
1/2 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1/4 tsp nutmeg
pinch cayenne
1 cup flour
4 eggs
1 cup grated swiss cheese

--Preheat oven to 400
--In a heavy saucepan over high heat, bring stock, butter, mustard, salt, pepper, nutmeg, and cayenne to boil.
--Immediately add flour all at once and beat vigorously until dough is smooth, pulls away from sides of pot and forms a ball.
--Remove from heat. Add eggs, one at a time, beating vigorously after each addition until dough is smooth and glossy. Mix in 2/3 cup of cheese.
--Drop batter onto parchment lined baking sheets, forming 3-4 inch mounds
--Alternatively, use batter form a large ring, ensuring spoonsful of batter touch each other.
--Sprinkle top of gougere with remaining cheese.
--Bake for 15-25 minutes. Don't remove until gougeres are nice and brown and puffed up. Serve and eat immediately. They flatten out when they cool.
Serves 4 as a light meal.

NOTES:
This is a bare-bones recipe that you can modify anyway you like. For example, today I used edam cheese for the batter and pecorino for the top. I didn't use cayenne or nutmeg, but used lots of pepper. I added chopped, cooked pancetta with the cheese.
